SWOSU Announces 31 New Football Players

Southwestern Oklahoma State University head football coach Ryan Held announced the addition of 12 high school signees on Wednesday to bring the total of 31 newcomers that have committed to play for the Bulldogs in 2007.

WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University head football coach Ryan Held announced the addition of 12 high school signees on Wednesday to bring the total of 31 newcomers that have committed to play for the Bulldogs in 2007.

Held said his staff were afforded the luxury of being “extremely selective” with this year’s group. The Bulldogs return 19 of the 22 starters from a 6-5 squad that finished second in the Lone Star Conference North Division.

“We feel really good about who is on campus right now,” Held said. “Most of the transfers are expected to go through spring drills and will provide instant competition at several spots.

“Our coaching staff, administration and current players did a great job of selling our vision of competing for a division title to each of the recruits.”

Held, who is in his third season, said this staff had a specific type of player in mind when they looked long term with the recruitment of the high school athlete.

“We knew going in this process we wanted to improve the overall athleticism of this team,” Held said. “We were looking for players that are a little bit longer in arms and in their legs; someone who can win the one-on-one match ups that are important in this league. This class exemplifies that.”

Held indicated that the bulk of the recruiting is now complete. However, the Bulldogs are still in the hunt for some athletes who remain undecided on their college choice.

“Recruiting never stops. We’re always looking to better our football program,” Held said. “If we don’t add one more player, were still will be in great shape for 2007.”
