Editor's Note: In the days leading up to the Live United Texarkana Bowl, we are reliving SWOSU Football's previous Bowl Game. Today, we share the official press release from the SWOSU Office of Public Relations following the 1991 Aztec Bowl, which was played in Mexico City. MEXICO CITY – Angel Medina caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Edwardo Gonzalez with 4:45 remaining to help the Mexico All-Stars pull out an exciting 35-28 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University in the 22nd annual Aztec Bowl played Saturday afternoon in Mexico City, Mexico.
Southwestern, an NAIA school from Weatherford, was playing before the largest crowd in its history as Aztec Bowl officials said the crowd numbered 42,000 in Olympic Stadium, home of the 1968 World Olympics.
The Mexico All-Stars, a team of 80 players with the majority of them being from the University of Mexico Condors team which won the Mexico national title, pulled out the victory when UM Condors teammates Median and quarterback Gonzalez teamed up for the 73-yard TD play with 4:45 remaining.
Gonzalez in the second half passed for 221 yards on 14-20 passing.
Southwestern jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Mustang junior Scott Boyd caught a 38-yard TD pass from redshirt freshman Grant Pitt of Oklahoma City PC North with 10:15 remaining in the 1st quarter. Running back Eric Royal then scored on a 2-yard run with 6:20 to go in the 1st quarter. Mexico came back and tied the game at halftime on 2 TD passes.
Mexico started out the 3rd period with 2 touchdown runs by Alejardro Lara (27-yarder) and Gonzalez (5-yard run) and with 6:15 remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Mexico team held a 28-14 lead.
But, SWOSU rallied. Brad Norman of Oklahoma City PC West scored on a 1-yard run with :57 to go in the 3rd. The score was set up when Midwest City Carl Albert linebacker Stephen Buford, who had a game-high 13 tackles, recovered a Mexico fumble at the 11.
Mexico then go the ball at the 20 after the kickoff. On first down, SW linebacker Mongo Allen of Del City intercepted a Mexico pass and SWOSU was set up at the Mexico 45. On first down, Pitt handed off to Norman who lateralled back to Pitt and he threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Robinson of OKC Millwood to tie the game at 28 all.
In the 4th quarter, SW could not get into Mexico territory. Mexico won it with the late TD pass.
Pitt ended up throwing a school-record 43 times for 230 yards and 2 TDs. Nathan Robinson was leading receiver with 6 catches for 107 yards and 1 TD. Mexico stopped the Bulldog running game, and Royal was leading rusher with 39 yards.
"This was a great experience for our players – not just on the football field," Southwestern coach Paul Sharp said. "We got to see a different culture and it let us appreciate what we have in the United States."
"They (Mexico) are a good team," he added. "We had a lot of breaks go against us. I'm very proud of the team and feel they represented our school, state and nation very well."
Southwestern ended up being penalized 102 yards on 13 penalties, while Mexico was flagged for 60 yards on 7 penalties.
SWOSU ended the season with a 6-4-1 record.
Also accompanying the football team was the Southwestern band which performed at pre-game, halftime and after the game. The crowd of 42,000 gave the band a standing ovation for their performance.
